A sensible fit for an informed homeowner with compatible plumbing, power, Wi-Fi, and a realistic install budget. It protects one path, not every source of water.
Flo installs inline on your pressurized supply line and watches the water moving through it, so it can catch supply-line trouble — a burst pipe, a failed appliance hose. It does not protect against roof leaks, sewer backup, groundwater, a failed sump pump, outdoor flooding, or any water that never runs through that monitored line. Knowing that boundary up front is most of what makes this a good or bad buy for you.
You'll see a 96% figure attached to systems like this. Here's where it comes from: a LexisNexis Risk Solutions claims study found a 96% drop in escape-of-water claim events for homes with an installed inline shutoff system. That's not the same as "Flo prevents 96% of water damage," so we quote it as what it is, not as what it isn't.
By Moen's own documentation, Flo usually spends 14 to 28 days in Learning Mode, getting to know your household's water use. During that stretch, the automatic usage-based shutoff isn't active and you won't get water alerts — so factor that startup window into your decision.
Moen's own docs acknowledge situations that can trigger a false alarm or call for retraining, and owner reports back that up: some false shutoffs, and a smaller number of early hardware failures. We read those as a recurring pattern to be aware of, not proof that every unit will have trouble.
At our check the 1-inch unit was $675.99 and showing sold out. Beyond the unit, a simple install can run a few hundred dollars, while jobs that need electrical work or pipe rerouting can climb to roughly $1,300–$2,250. Optional battery backup and FloProtect add more on top.
The base warranty is one year. FloProtect is an optional $5/month plan that adds a five-year extended warranty plus a deductible-reimbursement program with eligibility conditions — helpful to know about, though it isn't insurance.
